Record cleaning - A guide to clean records

Clean records are not only important for listening pleasure, but also for keeping their value. Below you will find simple instructions for cleaning your records with AM Clean Sound products.

We all love our records, so we should take care of them. There are many influences such as dust, heat, humidity, sunlight and of course careless cleaning that damage the important grooves and affect the cherished sound accordingly. But let's get right to it:

1. Remove dust and static with a cleaning brush.

For a flawless result, a good anti-static record brush is crucial when you start the cleaning process. Hold your record by the side and label whenever possible so you don't leave fingerprints on the record and/or push dust into the grooves and place it on the turntable.

When you hold the anti-static cleaning brush on the record surface, it is always good to be gentle and patient. Run the carbon fiber bristles over the record as it spins on the turntable. After the record has spun completely, angle the bristles toward the outside of the record and gently brush the particles off the vinyl surface. The static charge on the record is then neutralized as the carbon fiber bristles wipe across the record.

It makes sense to get into a routine and clean a record with the anti-static carbon fiber brush every time you put it on to get rid of the annoying static.

However, sometimes it requires a more thorough cleaning (but not every time). This is where the second step with cleaning solution and cloth comes in.

2. Spray the dirty areas with the cleaning solution.

The ingredients of the cleaning solution play an important role in ensuring that you enjoy your record collection for a long time.
Some swear by solutions containing isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and while the short-term effectiveness of this method is not in doubt, in the long run it can damage the surface - and thus the sound of the vinyl. With this in mind, choosing a cleaning solution with little to no alcohol content is an important element when it comes to the long-term preservation of your record collection.

Start by finding the areas that need cleaning. Either wet the cloth with the spray, or if you're spraying directly onto the record itself, make sure the label doesn't get wet. Otherwise, it may come off or be damaged. Areas that have particularly greasy dirt or problematic stains will require extra attention and perhaps a little more cleaning solution.

3. wipe the record with a lint-free microfiber cloth.

Using a lint-free cloth is extremely important, as it leaves no fibers behind, unlike a regular cloth. Needless to say, the accumulation of fibers will dull the sound, and in the worst case, can also damage the needle.

So take the cloth and gently wipe the record while following the grooves from the outside to the inside all around.

Now your record should shine and sound wonderful again.
